Tutorials, Workshops and Trips

Peak District

  • Are you interested in learning some of the skills needed to become a wildlife photographer?

  • Would you like to pick up field skills that you can use to take better images of British wildlife?

  • Is the conservation of the animal or plant important to you?

If you have answered yes to these questions then one of my individual or small group workshops may be ideal.

Examples of Workshops

Each workshop is designed to meet your individual needs. This could simply be to spend a full day working with me on one specific animal or plant. However you may like to spend a longer period of time working on a number of species or visiting a specific area. You may want to reduce individual costs and book the workshop for a small group of your friends. During each workshop you will have my full attention for the full day. Before we actually spend time in the field we will discuss your own needs in terms of the type of image you are looking for, the level of field skills you would like to acquire and how much tuition you may want with your camera equipment.

Camera Club Workshops

I run a number of workshops specifically designed for Camera Clubs that are very competitively priced. These are one day workshops for 10 people. Birds of Prey costs £450 per group. This workshop can be delivered at your own venue or on the edge of the Peak District at a private farm that includes woodland and attractive farm buildings. Images from recent Bird of Prey workshops can be seen on my blog page dated 30 March 2010

For more details and a fact sheet please contact me via the contacts page.

I am a trained teacher, I am CRB checked and I have indemnity and public liability insurance. I worked in a college with students aged 16+ for a number of years. My training as a teacher means that I fully prepare each workshop and that I am comfortable with working with new people. It is essential that you enjoy your experience and that you have confidence in my ability as both a wildlife photographer and tutor.

Individual or small group Workshops

One of the themes that runs strongly through my work is the conservation of the animals or plants that we will photograph. I work with a number of conservation organisations and during my degree I specialised in British wildlife conservation. In some cases you will meet key people such as wardens during your workshop and you will learn about some of the conflicts that ethically aware photographers have to take into consideration when working with British wildlife.

Each workshop will vary during the year. Many species are best photographed during certain months. I also have excellent contacts with a number of centres with captive mammals and birds of prey. If you would like to work for a day at one of these centres I am able to design and build sets and props which means you will come away with not only natural looking shots but unique ones as well.

You can buy a workshop for yourself or as a gift for a friend or family member. If you would like the latter I can supply a gift voucher in a card which makes an ideal present.

You can pay for your workshop on the payments page.

Costs

For a full day individual workshop, £150.

For small groups up to 5 people, £80 per person. These costs are based on one day's workshop. There are no additional costs if the venue is within 60 miles of my home in Sheffield. If however I need to travel beyond this distance then a small petrol charge will be added. Please ask when booking and this will be clearly displayed in the costing before you commit your deposit. I require a 10% booking fee paid in advanced and the full fee paid one week before the agreed workshop date.

I am very adaptable and if there is anything you would like to ask or you have any species you specifically would like to photograph please contact me by phone or email and I may be able to organise it for you. I am able to organise longer workshops. For overseas visitors I can organise a week's wildlife photography in either England, Wales or Scotland to include all transport, meals and accommodation. If you have any specific requests or would like a quote please do not hesitate to contact me.

Trips in 2012

Eagles in the Snow in Norway, 4-11 Feb.

There can surely be no more dramatic an experience for a wildlife photographer than the swooping down in front of you of a wild Golden Eagle or White-Tailed Eagle in a snow clad environment. The same applies to seeing the first light of dawn appear in a forest clearing where a wild Goshawk is perched in front of you at it's plucking post.  Add the chance to enjoy photographing Red Squirrel and small forest birds including Bullfinch and Crested Tit and you can see why a trip to the renowned wildlife photography set-ups of Ole Martin-Dahle have so much to offer. We've added a day trip to a Roe Deer and Moose feeding hide and an arctic zoo where we will have sole access into the enclosures to photograph Lynx, Wolf, Arctic Fox and Red Fox in their snow-covered enclosures - all in all a true northern winter wildlife spectacular with a fantastic variety of images to aspire to in a jam packed trip. £2465

Birds of Holland 8-13 May 2012.

We will be spending time on the beautiful island of Texel, photographing the elegant avocets which have just come back to the island - excellent close-ups can be obtained and we will spend 2 nights on the island so
we can work in the best possible light. Other highlights back on the mainland where we are based for the remainder of the trip are the chance to photograph fabulous black-necked grebes in full breeding plumage plus stunning spring flowering meadows with black-tailed godwit. Purple heron, blue throats and great crested grebes, and more besides make this is a wetland Spring photographic treat. £995.

Shetland 1-10 July 2012.

This remote outpost of Britain has such an amazingly diverse range of wildlife to offer the nature photographer, from towering sea cliffs to windswept moors and from crystal clear lochs to rich rocky shores. The Shetland Isles has got to be one of the best places in Britain for wildlife: the sheer size of the sea cliffs at the famous national nature reserve at Hermaness are breath-taking; the evocative call of the red throated diver is one that evokes mystery and intrigue; the drumming of the male snipe as it rises from the wet moors is rare indeed in the mainland of Britain, but on the Shetlands this sight and sound is still commonplace. The splash by the rocky shore is a sign of one of the most charismatic mammals - the otter and this beautiful mammal can be found in many of the quiet inland fjords.  These beautiful islands are well known to me with a multitude of visits over the years, and this wealth of experience will guarantee that we will go to the best locations that the Shetland Isles has to offer the wildlife photographer. £1,525
