Starlings at dusk - January 2007

Starling roosts are visually and audibly stunning. I have always been fascinated by huge masses of birds, particularly their coordination. When the starlings arrive they do so in groups of 20 to 500. As the groups build up they assume a huge mass which initially simply looks like dust on the image. However when a sparrowhawk or buzzard starts to play hide and seek with them they tighten up their formation  and the amazing, liquid shapes start.

All EOS 1D mk 11, 70-200 mm at ISO 800 to 1000
