The crossing of the Mara River

There are many great wildlife spectacles in the world and the wildebeest crossing of the Mara River in Kenya must rate as one of the very best. The animals cross sometime in August but the precise time varies and it is of great fortune if you can coincide your trip with the crossing. This year (2005) I was lucky to be able to witness the crossing though the actual photography was not easy. The greatest challenge is not the animals themselves but the large number of minivans jostling for position and a vantage point. Thick bushes on the banks of the river don't help much! The animals seem to wait for one brave (or foolish) one to lead the way, once it starts a sense of panic and urgency seems to grip the wildebeest and they run, jump and tumble into the river and swim across. Great clouds of dust are kicked up (a lot from the minivans as well!!) which adds an ethereal quality to the scene.
